The Bread & Butter Thing

Celebrating 10 years

What is The Bread & Butter Thing?

The Bread & Butter Thing is a mobile food club that provides low-cost weekly food shops that are essential for family eating, from fresh fruit and veg to fridge favourites and cupboard staples.

They are celebrating 10 years of bringing good food to communities, helping families access affordable, groceries while reducing food waste and creating stronger community connections across the UK.

What started with a single van serving one Manchester community has grown into the UK's largest member-based food redistribution charity, supporting more than 100,000 households through community food clubs nationwide.  Over the last decade, the organisation has helped millions of meals reach families who need them most, while ensuring good food never goes to waste.

At Co-op Live, we're proud to play a part in that journey.

Since June 2024, surplus food from the venue has been redistributed through The Bread & Butter Thing, helping provide more than 26,108 meals, preventing 11 tonnes of food waste and saving 27.4 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

Every week, The Bread & Butter Thing redistributes over 100 tonnes of quality surplus food, making fresh, nutritious groceries more affordable and accessible for families across the UK. Through its network of volunteers, partners and community hubs, the organisation is helping reduce food insecurity, cut waste and build stronger community.

As The Bread & Butter Thing marks this milestone anniversary, we're celebrating the volunteers, members and partners who have made a decade of impact possible.

Here's to 10 years of bringing good food to communities, reducing waste and creating positive change where it's needed most.
